Trimming is done to remove excess clay, give the pot an even consistent thickness, give stability and/or function, and to give the pot some lift and beauty. We could give you more reasons why potters trim but those are the main reasons why. Some either love it or hate it but trimming can transform a heavy piece of clay into something that is easy to hold, look at, and use. While trimming takes some practice, having the right tools helps. Below, you can find all the trimming tools you will need to transform your work into something you can use. A good trimming tool has a sharp steel edge to scrape away clay. Some are all metal with an angled blade while others are simply wire loops.
