Clay Cut-Out Snowman

Are you like everyone else I know that likes to decorate for the Holidays and change of season? You have tons of decorations packed away in totes, bags, boxes, etc...

Well, the decoration I'm showing you today can be packed flat, then put together for the 3D effect! This snowman is super cute, and once you make it, you will see how easy it is to make trees, pumpkins, and any other decoration you want!

Grab your coffee and follow me to the studio!

For this project you will need:

  • a clay slab approximately 1/4" thick
  • various size circle cutters or paper templates

  • utility knife
  • ruler

The first step is to cut out 6 circles of clay. You will need 2 of each size.

Next, use a ruler to determine a "rough" center on each circle, then lightly score it with the utility knife.

Once you've determined the middle in both directions, cut a slot out of the pieces as follows...

The largest circle (bottom of snowman) will only get the type of slot shown in the picture above. You may also have to flatten one end of the circle a bit so it stands nicely.

For the middle and top sections, you will need to add a little more finesse to the slots, as shown below.

The addition of the second slot in one circle, and a wider opening on the other, will help ensure the pieces fit together properly.

Now all you have to do is assemble the pieces and adjust where necessary.

Once you're sure they fit together well, sandwich the pieces between a sheet of newspaper, the sandwich that between two ware boards to ensure even drying. After a few days remove them from the boards and newspaper and set them aside to finish drying.

Now the last setps are your choice. You can finish them off however you want to, but I fire mine to max cone (I use cone 6 clays), then either spray paint them, leave them white and just decorate them, or use the Mayco Softees to give them a nice shiny finish!

The best part is, no matter how you finish them off, you can still take them apart and lay flat for storage... saving prescious space in that decoration tote!

Try your hand at the snowman then expand your horizons by designing your own pine tree, stars, snowflakes, etc...
