Sgraffito Tools

Sgraffito in Italian means “to scratch”. In the ceramics world, it is a decorating technique done by applying layers of color/s to leather hard pottery and then scratching off parts of the layer/s using a special tool to create contrasting images, patterns, and texture as revealed by the clay color/s underneath. The layer/s of color underneath can either be underglazes or colored slips.

Kemper Sgraffito Tools are made out of sharp stainless steel blades attached to a hardwood handle. They are extremely useful when adding impressions and decorations to clay. They come in different shapes and sizes for different effects. More than just for sgraffito, they can also be used for intricate carving, cutting, and refining of details in clay.
