These glass instruments measure the specific gravity of liquids (the
ratio of the mass of a material to that of an equal mass of water), which
is some people use to achieve proper thickness glaze and slip.
The hydrometer is placed in the container where it will float like a
buoy and the meter can be read. Dipping or pouring glazes
generally have a specific gravity of 0.9 to 1.00. The range for
spraying glazes is 1.5 to 1.7, and for brushing glazes is 2.2-2.5. |
