Here's how it works.   Find a picture or other image you like, or just type a message into your computer word processor.   Print that on the special Fired-On Images decal paper.  Cut-out the image, and soak it in warm water.

Once the decal begin to separate from the paper backing, remove it and slide the decal on to your plate (or mug, or platter, or tile...  any glazed ceramic surface, or glass surface.)  Position the decal and blot-off the excess water, and wait an hour or so for it to completely dry.  Fire the item in your kiln  (see included instructions for more details) and you have a permanent image fired onto your item.

Before we decided to sell this product we did some test firings.  This mug (with our contact information) was the first test firing we did.  It was fired to cone 06 on a white stoneware mug that was purchased from Target.  It worked great.  It's permanent and the lettering came out clear.

You only need 3 things to fire on your own decal images:  An inexpensive HP or Canon Black and White laser printer, Fired-On Images Transfer Paper and access to a kiln.

Questions and Answers

Q: What is a decal?
A: It's a image which has been printed on a transferable medium.   In this case, it's your image (picture, words, logo, etc) printed onto decal transfer paper.

Q:  What color are the images created with these decals?
A:  Once fired, the decals leave a rich sepia brown colored image.  Some of the samples on this page show multicolored images.  These were created using different colored glazes/underglazes along with the decal.

Q:  Will this work using my (any brand except HP  or Canon ) laser printer?
A:  No.  The toner in HP/Canon printers contains iron, which ultimately leaves the final brown decal image.  Apparently other printer manufacturers do not use iron in their toner.

Q:  I have a Color HP or Canon Laser Printer.  Will that work?
A:  No, the printer must be black and white printing only.  Color toner will not work.

Q: Do you have a list of HP/Canon printers, and the quality of decal they give?
A:  Yes, here is a copy of the Dec 2010 printer list

Q:  Can I put the cup/platter/plate with the final decal image in a microwave oven?
A:  Yes.  As long at the original item was microwave safe, it still will be.  Arguably the iron from the decal will heat in the microwave oven, but in our testing, its undetectable.

Q:  Is it food safe?
A:  Yes.  It's as food safe as the original item.

Q:  Is it dishwasher safe?
A:  Yes.  It's as dishwasher safe as the original item.

Q:  Will this work on glass as well a ceramics?
A:  Yes, the firing instructions are different, but the image will transfer to both glass and ceramic

Q:  Can I apply these decals on top of any fired glaze?
A:  Yes, it seems like it.  We're not aware of any ceramic glaze that is strictly incompatible.  The main objective in the firing process is to somewhat soften the glaze, so the minerals in the toner permanently melt into it.  You many have to experiment/test-fire to determine the correct firing temperature for your specific glaze(s).
