Hydrometer

TLAMHYD.jpg (7770 bytes)
These glass instruments measure the specific gravity of liquids (the ratio of the mass of a material to that of an equal mass of water), which is some people use to achieve proper thickness glaze and slip.  The hydrometer is placed in the container where it will float like a buoy and the meter can be read.  Dipping or pouring glazes generally have a specific gravity of 0.9 to 1.00.  The range for spraying glazes is 1.5 to 1.7, and for brushing glazes is 2.2-2.5.
