Glass Pendants
This kit contains COE 96 glass which fuses at approximately 1480
degrees F. The "dichroic" glass in this kit is COE 96
fusible glass coated with a thin film coating of brilliant metallic colors
which come to life after fusing. The dichoric glass can be fused
with or without a clear glass cap. If fired with clear glass on top
of it, the dichroic colors achieve an intense and glossy finish after
firing. If fired with no clear glass on top, the dichroic colors
achieve a satin finish after firing. It is possible to create a wide
variety of unique and beautiful hand crafted rounded highly polished
unfaceted glass gems (cabochons) with the glass in this kit. Below
you will find the instructions to create just one example of an exciting
1" square black pendant with diagonal dichro and clear glass
cap.
Note: This portion of the project applies to the Black Magic Kit
- Using the glass scoring tool, score a 1 square inch of black and 1
square inch of clear glass. (Note, this scoring tool can be used
with oil, but it is not necessary to use it with oil.) Use a
ruler or other straight edge to make your line, then cut along it with
the scoring tool.
- Gently break the pieces free.
- Score and break three 2/3" sections of the clear dichro
noodles. Score and break one 1/"x1/2" section of the
green dichro.
- With a soft paper towel, clean each cut piece of glass with acetone
or alcohol. (Fingerprints and dust may be visible on the fired
piece.) It is useful to use gloves when handling the cleaned
glass.
- Apply glass separator to your shelf. You can also use kiln
shelf paper if you have it. (Glass separator is similar to kiln
wash but a little finer. Regular kiln wash can be used, but the
back surface will be a little rougher. When applying make sure
the separator is smooth, or make a texture you wouldn't mind seeing on
the back of the glass.)
- Place the black square on the wash/paper. Place one dichro
noodle on the top edge of the black square and one dichro strip on the
bottom edge of the black square. Place the 3rd strip of dichro
noodle in the middle diagonally. Place the square of green
dichro above the bottom dichro noodle. Gently place the clear
glass cap on top of the dichro pieces directly over the black square.
This portion of the project applies to the Crystal Dreams Project:
-
Using a proper glass scoring tool, score a 1 inch
square of clear and a 1” x 2/3” piece of clear.
-
Score and break a one inch strip of dichro
noodle.
-
Score and break one 1/3 inch by 1 inch strip of
opaque blue. Score and
break one 1/3” x 1” piece of
transparent aqua blue.
-
With a soft paper towel, clean each cut piece of
glass with acetone or alcohol.
-
With a toothpick place a tiny dot of glue under
each piece and arrange them on the 1” clear square next to each
other: opaque blue,
dichro noodle, trans aqua blue.
-
Place the 1” x 2/3” clear
with a dot of glue on top of
trans aqua blue and Dichroic
noodle.
For both projects, continue on:
- Fire the glass to 1480 degrees Fahrenheit and hold for approximately
10 minutes or until the glass is completely fused together. (You
can peek into the kiln at this temperature without harming the glass.)
- Turn the kiln off and wait for the kiln to return to room
temperature before opening.
- Wash the fused glass cabochon with warm soapy water to remove fired
kiln paper or wash particles. Dry with a paper towel.
- Your cabochon is ready to be applied to jewelry findings with
silicone or epoxy.
- Repeat the process using your own designs.
Note: You have lots of extra glass, so now you can make your own
designs!
