Pioneer Pottery is a classic text in
ceramic literature. Author Michael Cardew was one of the early and
influential figures in British ceramics. In 1942, the Crown Agents asked
him to go to Nigeria to set up a pottery. It was his experiences there and
later in the Gold Coast that formed the basis for this book that has
influenced generations of potters around the world.
This completely redesigned new edition is being published in commemoration
of the 100th anniversary of Cardew's birth. His son, Seth Cardew, himself
a well-known potter, has written a new introduction to this volume. A new
full-color section featuring photographs of previously unshown work is
also included. This book has brought great inspiration and guidance to
potters for decades, and this new and updated edition will educate and
enlighten for decades to come. |

is known and highly prized for its delicacy, translucency, fineness and
whiteness, but it has always posed particular problems for the ceramicist
using it. In his latest book, Peter Lane looks at the development of
porcelain in the last two decades of the 20th century. He gives
particular consideration to the technical achievements, the working
practices and aesthetic concerns of ceramicists who work with this most
popular medium and its close relative, bone china. The composition
of porcelain and bone chine bodies and glazes is described in addition to
the realization of three dimensional form and the various uses of color,
pattern, texture and decorative processes. The book presents a wide
diversity of porcelain objects which will both inspire and enthrall. |

| Stoneware is a hard, strong, and vitrified ware,
usually fired above 1200 C (2192 F), which allows the body and glaze to
mature at the same time and form an integrated body-glaze layer. During
firing, the organic matter found in clay is burned away, the color
changes, and a layer of glass is fused onto the surface. The quality of
the glaze owes much to the establishment of this layer, and it is
therefore the glaze quality that determines a ware's acceptance as
stoneware. Such high firing can achieve qualities and finishes that appeal
to many potters; however, firing clay at such high temperatures imposes
particular demands on the clay, glazes, and kilns. In Stoneware,
Richard Dewar discusses the various considerations that need to be taken
into account when working at higher temperatures and shows the myriad
techniques and glazes that can be used to achieve excellent results.
Including the work of Sandy Brown, Will Levi Marshall, Robin Welch, John
Calver, and other internationally known artists, this handbook is the only
one available on this increasingly popular subject. |

| Once a ceramic piece is finished it
can be embellished or enhanced with other materials, such as a wooden or
metal handle, glass stopper, or resin knob. Objects with varying textures
such as feathers, recycled pieces of wood, metal, glass, or other ceramic
pieces can be joined after firing with modern bonding methods. Ceramics
with Mixed Media is a practical handbook that shows how other
materials can be combined with ceramics for functional, decorative, or
sculptural reasons.
In this book, Joy Bosworth examines the best ways of combining and
fitting these materials together-including some inside the kiln. She
covers the practicalities and specific problems that one is likely to
encounter when trying to join different materials together. Helpful
step-by-step illustrations are included along with the work of many
contemporary artists, which will both inform and inspire the reader. |
